8th April – International Roma Day
Almost 46 years ago first World Roma Congress was held near London from 7th to 12th April 1971 and since then 8th April holds an important place in Roma calendar. After almost 20 years, 4th World Romani Congress took place in Poland in 1990 and during this Congress; 8th April was decided and officially signed as International Romani Day.
International Roma Day is not just about celebrating Roma culture; it also about highlighting the persecution and discrimination that Roma faces in all areas of life in every society. It is a day when ‘Gypsy’ – a derogatory and disrespectful word was discarded in favour of ‘Roma’. 8th April is also a day to remember all those Romas who suffered at the hands of racist not only people but groups and governments.
Let’s remember International Roma Day and fight for the equal opportunities and equal rights for Romas!
